Trekking across the highest mountains of Greece

This trekking tour takes you over Greece’s two highest mountains Pindos and Olympus and visits the inspiring Meteora Monasteries. The Zagoria region is part of the Pindos Mountain Range, made up of the Gamila and Mitsikeli Mountains and flanked by the Aoos River – offering some of Greece’s most striking scenery. You can enjoy a magnificent combination of trekking over cobblestone paths and stone bridge and wandering among the traditional stone built villages of Zagoria. You’ll visit Europe’s deepest Canyon (Vikos Canyon), stay on top of the mountains at Astraka Refuge and hike to the Dragon Lake.  After your visit at the Meteora Monasteries, the exhilarating trek to the peaks of Mount Olympus can begin. The views into Enipeas Gorge, from the top to the Aegean Sea and to the highest peaks including Mytikas, the highest point of Greece will stay unforgettable.

Crossing Zagoria & Olympus is a challenging point-to-point trekking tour where you will cross the famous Greek mountain ranges from West to East until the Aegean Sea. It is recommended for more experienced hikers with good condition.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Thessaloniki airport – drive to city hotel
Upon arrival at Thessaloniki airport you will drive to your hotel in the city centre. There you’ll check-in and have some time to relax and take a stroll around the city.

Day 2: Transfer from Thessaloniki to Kipi and walk to Monodendri
After the transfer to the region of Zagoria you’ll start your walk at the village Kipi, doing a circular hike and visiting most of the famous old bridges around Zagoria. In the evening you’ll stay at Monodendri, a village next to Vikos Gorge.
Hiking Time: 4 hrs
: 880 – 950 m

Day 3: Monodendri – Vikos Gorge – Mikro Papingo
You’ll start by crossing Vikos Gorge, a very impressive canyon and one of the deepest in the world! Starting from Monodendri, you’ll hike downhill, where you’ll come to the small river that flows through the gorge. Then continuing next to the stream you’ll walk right into the heart of the National Park. In the gorge, lots of wild animals still find refuge, such as birds of prey, bears and wild boars. The walk ends in Mikro Papingo, where you’ll spend the night.

Altitude: 950 – 550 – 960 m

Day 4: Mikro Papingo – Astraka Refuge – Drakolimni – Astraka Refuge
Hike from Papingo towards the high plateaus of Mt. Timfi, until you reach an alpine lake at 2.050 m. The walk begins from Mikro Papingo, one of the most beautiful villages of Zagoria, and continues through beautiful and serene scenery towards Astraka mountain refuge. On the way up you’ll find a lot of water springs, so there’s no need to carry lots of water. After a small stop at the mountain hut, you’ll continue another 1,5 hours to “Drakolimni”, the impressive alpine lake between the highest peaks. The scenery is magnificent, overlooking the Pindos mountain range. Tonight you’ll stay in the Astraka Refuge.

Altitude:  960 – 1.950 – 1.500 – 2.050 – 1.950 m

Day 5:  Astraka – Tsepelovo
After your authentic mountain experience of the previous day, your route today will follow picturesque trails in the shadow of the peak of Mount Astraka. You’ll descend from the higher mountains, hiking across the famous arched bridges made of local rock and passing an ancient monastery until you reach the traditional village of Tsepelovo, where you’ll spend the night.

Altitude: 1.950 – 1.080 m

Day 6: Tsepelovo – Diasello Avallou – Skamneli – Tsepelovo
From the village of Tsepelovo, you’ll ascend to the ridge of Diasello Avallou on 2.300 m, with a spectacular view over Vikos Gorge and Konitsa. You’ll take a different path down to the traditional village of Skamneli. Then you’ll walk back to Tsepelovo, where you’ll spend the night again.

Altitude: 1.080 – 2.300 – 1.100 – 1.080 m

Day 7: Tsepelovo – Vradeto – Beloi – Kapesovo
Starting out once again from Tsepelovo you’ll hike to Vradeto, the highest village of the region and you’ll hike towards the viewpoint Beloi. The view will astonish you, as you can see the whole Vikos gorge under your feet! You’ll hike back to Vradeto and continue down the famous stone steps of Vradeto to the village Kapesovo, where you’ll stop for the night.
Hiking Time: 6 ½ hrs
Altitude: 1.080- 1.370 – 1.100 – 950 m

Day 8: Transfer to Kastraki
Leaving Kapesovo in the morning, you’ll be transferred to Kastraki at the base of the Meteora Monasteries. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the view of the monasteries above you and explore the town.
Transfer Time: 4 hrs

Day 9: Meteora Monasteries
This day is mainly a cultural day. The famous Meteora Monasteries are built on 24 large rocks in the flats of Thessaly and offer a stunning view over the flatlands and mountains. Short walks connect the monasteries that you’ll visit. After a coffee break you’ll take the bus back to the hotel.

Day 10: Transfer to Mount Olympus, Hike from Agios Dionysios – Refuge A
You’ll leave Kastraki today and be transferred to Mount Olympus. The drive along the Enipeas gorge up to the monastery of Agios Dionysios offers already fantastic sights into the deep gorge with its steep cliffs and to the highest peaks. After a short visit of the monastery Agios Dionysios, you’ll start your hike up towards the peaks from here. The refuge A, located at 2.100 m, is your goal for today. After a short time you’ll pass a waterfall and crossing on wooden bridges over the river Enipeas you’ll reach Prionia. Here you can see one of the sources of the River Enipeas. Through a dense pine and beech tree forest you’ll then hike up to mountain refuge A, where you will enjoy the great views towards the highest peaks and the Aegean Sea. Here you’ll stay for the night.

Altitude:  900 – 1.100 – 2.100 m

Day 11: Refuge A – Skala – Skolio – Refuge A
As a reward for yesterday’s hard ascent to the ‘seat of the gods’, you can enjoy the beautiful mountain sunrise above the Aegean Sea and spend the day trekking the peaks of Olympus. After breakfast at the refuge, you’ll hike up to the peak of Skala, where you can rest, eat your picnic lunch and take in the breathtaking views. Depending on the weather, you can continue to Mytikas (2919m), the highest peak of the Olympus range or visit the peak of Skolio. Overnight you will stay again at Mountain Refuge A.

Day 12: Refuge A – Prionia – Litohoro – transfer to the Olympic Riviera
After the last two days trekking it’s time for a day at the beach. You’ll head down the mountain and have the option of stopping at the monastery of Agios Dionysios. After you reach Litohoro, you’ll be transferred to your hotel at the Olympic Riviera. Now you can relax and enjoy the beautiful sandy beach.
Hiking Time: 7 hrs
Altitude: 2.100 – 1.100 – 350 m

Day 13: Relaxation Day
Enjoy the beautiful beach and sea today and recuperate and relax after all your adventures. You have the opportunity to explore the area, visit the excavation site of Dion on the foot of Mount Olympus or experience a tandem flight with a paraglider.

Day 14: Transfer from Olympic Riviera to Thessaloniki
Spend the morning on the beach and transfer in the afternoon to Thessaloniki. Take some time tonight to explore Greece’s second largest city.
