A Mythic Hiking Experience

Starting from the region of Thermopylae
and the monument of Leonidas, King of the Spartans and his 300 warriors, you’ll arrive at the end of your trip at the Oracle of Delphi. You’ll hike from mountain to mountain, through the region of Fthiotida exploring its nature and culture, until you arrive in the region of Fokida. You’ll start from Knimida where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Gulf of Malikos, where it seems like the mountains grew out of the sea. At the same spot, you can see the beautiful green island of Euboea. As you hike towards Kallidromos you’ll gove over the very small crossing known as the Pass of Thermopylae. From Kallidromos you’ll continue to Parnass National Park which is Central Greece’s second highest mountain. The myriad of green shades of the pine trees is spectacular here. On your hike to Delphi, looking like a huge sea of trees, you’ll pass the biggest olive grove in Greece.

Trekking Central Greece is a point-to-point trekking tour of medium difficulty where you will hike through unknown regions of the unspoilt mountains combined with visits of world-famous, historic sites. It is suitable for hikers with good condition and some experience.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Greece – Drive to Kamena Vourla
Drive from Athens Airport to the 5* hotel in Kamena Vourla next to the beach.

Day 2: Kamena Vourla
Today you’ll hike to the vista of Mount Knimida were the view is breath-taking. You’ll get the chance to become familiar with the area on this easy hike through fields, vineyards and woods. Overnight in Kamena Vourla.

Day 3: The battle of Thermopyles
Today you’ll dive into history at the site of the epic Battle of Thermopyles. You’ll see the statue of the Spartan King Leonidas and what’s more, you’ll begin your hike by taking the “Path of Efialtis”, where allegedly Efialtis led Xerxis and his Persian Army down to defeat Leonidas and his army of 300. You’ll enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the entire battle ground, giving you the opportunity to imagine the events for yourself. After enjoying this journey back in time, you’ll take a small hike up to a small lake and the head downhill to your guest house in Paleochori.

Day 4: Mount Parnassos – Amfiklia
After you leave the guest house today, you’ll have an easy hike between Mount Kalidromos and Mount Parnassos. Around the plateau there used to be four big ancient cities and we’ll hike through two of them today. Before you end your hike, you’ll go to the picturesque village of Amfiklia and visit the local bread museum. Overnight in Amfiklia.

Day 5: Temple of Apollo – Agnatio
A sand path will lead you today from the guest house to the neighboring village of Polidrosso. The national path 22 begins here, passes the ancient temple of Apollo and goes up the mountain to the village of Eptalofos.
Overnight in Agnatio.
Hiking Time: 4 ½ hrs
Change in Altitude: 700m

Day 6: The Cave Korikio Andro – Delphi

The European path E4 passes through the village of Eptalofos and will lead you to Mount Livadi, in Parnassos National Park. A small detour takes you to Korikio Andro, a beautiful cave with stalactites and stalagmites, which is the mythical entrance to Hades and dedicated to the nymphs.
Return to the main path which leads you back down to the village with a spectacular view of the archaeological site of the Oracle of Delphi and then to the village of Delphi, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 7: The Oracle of Delphi – Transfer to Athens
Visit and look around the archaeological site of Delphi with a guided tour of the oracle. You’ll be transferred to Athens where you can enjoy a stroll around the city. Overnight in Athens.

Day 8: Departure Day – Athens Airport
