Discover the Beauty of Nature

Alonnisos
is an island with magnificent scenery and ideal for walking. It belongs to the Northern Sporades and is famous for its rich vegetation and clear water, therefore the National Marine Park was found here in 1992 to protect the Mediterranean Monk Seals. The hilly countryside has a wide variety of landscapes and vegetation to explore: from low bushes with unique herbs, to dense pine forests and gnarled ancient trees like holm oaks, cedar and arbutus trees. Walking on the island gives you the chance to discover everything it has to offer and enjoy views of the sea along the way. Along the way stop for a swim in the clear deep blue waters of the small bays and coves that you come across!

Hiking Alonnisos is a hotel based hiking tour of moderate difficulty, where you hike with an experienced, local guide through the unique nature of the island.

Trip Itineray

Day 1: Arrival in Greece – travel to Alonnisos
After arrival at the airport you’ll drive from Thessaloniki to Volos or from Athens to Agios Konstantinos. At either harbour you’ll take a ferry or hydrofoil to Alonnisos. Here you’ll be picked-up and then check-in to your hotel at Patitiri.

Day 2:  Patitiri – Palia Alonnisos – Kalovoulos – Palia Alonnisos – Megalos Mourtias – Patitiri
At the start of your trip, Elias leads you up the old donkey track to the old village (Palia Alonissos), situated 200 meters above sea level. After a tour of the village, with its Post- Byzantine churches and fortifications, and a history lesson from Elias, you’ll stop for refreshments at one of the cafes before continuing to the top of Kalovoulos. Kalovoulos is the southern promontory of Alonnisos, and once you reach the top, your efforts will be rewarded by a wonderful view. On the way back to Patitiri you pass by the beach of Megalos Mourtias.

Day 3: Patitiri – Spartines – Tsoukalia – Panayia Sto Vouno – Patitiri
Today you’ll join Elias and hike from the south-east coast to the north-west one, passing, passing picturesque beaches and dense pine along the way. At the beach of Tsoukalia, Elias will tell you about an ancient workshop that produced pots (amforae) on this spot in the 4th century BC. Unfortunately, the area is not yet developed into an archeological site. The tour continues up through a narrow ravine, to the small mountain of Vouno, where you’ll visit the Post- Byzantine Chapel Panayia Sto Vouno. Shortly afterwards you’ll stop for refreshments at Café Sunset to enjoy the panoramic view, before returning to Patitiri.

Day 4: Free Day

Day 5: Patitiri – Raches – Isomata – Steni Vala
On this hike, Elias will guide you along the southeastern slopes of Alonnisos, through olive groves and pinewoods. Finally you’ll reach the fishing village of Steni Vala, where Elias will tell you about the fishing traditions of the island, and the Marine Park, with its protected monk seals. After a lunch of fresh fish at a local taverna, you’ll return by minibus.

Day 6:  Ayios Dimitris – Strovili – Kastanorema – Kastania – Koumarorahi – Ayios Dimitris
You’ll start the trip by minibus, driving up the southeast coast of Alonnisos to the beach of Ayios Dimitris. The beach is the largest in Alonnisos and unlike the rest of the beaches on the island; it forms a convex point that sticks out into the sea like a white arrow. After the beach, you’ll continue along the steep slope alongside the coast. Then the tour goes up through the Gorge of Kastanorema along a winding path surrounded by vertical rocks. The gorge ends at the location of Kastania, at the plateau of Koumarorahi, where you’ll eat your lunch while enjoying the impressive view of the sea and island of Peristera. After the break the tour continues down the slope to the beach of Ayios Dimitris, where you can have a swim in the clear water. Return to Patitiri by fishing boat, weather permitting, otherwise by minibus.

Day 7: Patitiri – Ayii Anaryii – Megali Ammos – Vathi to Rema – Kastraki – Patitiri
You’ll visit the two old Post-Byzantine chapels of Ayii Anaryii, situated at the edge of the cliffs on the north-west coast of Alonnisos. Then you’ll continue to the Bay of Megali Ammos where you eat your lunch at one of the small beaches. Elias will give you information about the chapels, the goat keepers and the local flora. Then the tour continues up through a narrow ravine that leads to Kastraki, an archeological site at the top of a hill. From here you’ll return to Patitiri, enjoying a great view of the southern part of the island.
