Discover the Beauty of the Island

Alonnisos
is an island with magnificent scenery and ideal for walking. It belongs to the Northern Sporades and is famous for its rich vegetation and clear water, therefore the National Marine Park was found here in 1992 to protect the Mediterranean Monk Seals. The hilly countryside has a wide variety of landscapes and vegetation to explore: from low bushes with unique herbs, to dense pine forests and gnarled ancient trees like holm oaks, cedar and arbutus trees. Walking on the island gives you the chance to discover everything it has to offer and enjoy views of the sea along the way. Along the way stop for a swim in the clear deep blue waters of the small bays and coves that you come across!

Alonnisos Self Guided is a hotel based tour of moderate difficulty where you hike with your own pace through the unique nature of the island.

Trip Itineray

Day 1: Arrival in Greece – travel to Alonnisos
After arrival at the airport you’ll drive from Thessaloniki to Volos or from Athens to Agios Konstantinos. At either harbour you’ll take a ferry or hydrofoil to Alonnisos. Here you’ll be picked-up and then check-in to your hotel at Patitiri.

Day 2: Patitiri – Yialia – Palia Alonnisos – Patitiri
This tour goes down to the beautifully restored old windmill. It is situated dramatically on the cliffs of the small beach of Yialia. It is possible to take a dip here. Next the tours goes up to the old village, Palia Alonnisos (200 meters above the sea level), and from here it goes down to Patitiri again. The tour follows wide donkey paths, dirt roads and some asphalt roads. The windy road down to the beach descends steadily. There are only low bushes along this road, which means that you can see the windmill on the rocks below. There aren’t any really steeps passages on this route but quite a few hills.

Day 3: Patitiri – Palia Alonnisos – Megalos Mourtias – Patitiri
This is a unique tour that passes through the countryside, the old village, Palia Alonnisos, beautiful pine woods and a nice beach for swimming. At the beach there are several tavernas. The tour goes along wide donkey paths, dirt roads and asphalt roads.
Palia Alonnisos is beautifully situated on two hills, about 200 meters above sea level. At the highest point are the remains of the old castle (Kastro). A number of these very small houses are built at the very edge of the cliff. Some are in ruins but every year more houses are restored. Most of the village consists of holiday residences so the place is very lively in the summer season. There are lots of tavernas, cafes and shops.
In the old days Palia Alonnisos was the main village of the island. It was more or less depopulated in the years after 1965, when a big earthquake forced the inhabitants out of their homes. The government though built many new houses in Patitiri to help bring the village back to life.

Day 4: Relaxation Day

Day 5: Patitiri – Mega Nero – Tourkobigla – Megali Ammos – Mega Nero – Patitiri
This tour leads up to the top of Tourkovikla (348 m above sea level), one of the prettiest spots for viewing the southern part of the island. Next it goes down through a narrow ravine to the Bay of Megali Ammos, with its beautiful small beaches facing the steep and rough west coast of Alonnisos. The tour follows wide donkey paths, dirt roads and small beach and forest paths. The passage down through the ravine is a little steep and stony so it’s suggested that you wear solid shoes. A very impressive tour, but for enthusiastic walkers!

Day 6: Patitiri – Panagia sto Bouno – Patitiri
A terrific tour for great views, that passes three small churches each in a setting more picturesque than the one before. During the ascent towards the telecommunications antenna (OTE) there’s a fantastic view over Palia Alonnisos, small mountains, ravines and the sea. When you get to the other side of the small mountain Vouno the landscape changes and you can look over the small wooded hills of Alonnisos and the sea towards the east. The tour follows wide donkey paths, earth roads and a bit on asphalt roads. The tour passes near the top of the small (260 m) mountain, Vouno so there’s a steady ascent on the way out and descent on the way back.

Day 7: Patitiri – Mega Nero – Spartines – Votsi – Rousoum – Patitiri
This tour has a lot to offer. It passes through Alonnisos’ cultivated landscape with its olive groves, vineyards and vegetable gardens. It passes through virgin forest, two lovely beaches and the three fishing villages of Votsi, Rousoum and Patitiri. The tour follows wide and narrow paths, earth roads and a little bit of asphalt roads, it goes steadily up and down.
